BPS stands for Bio-functional Prosthetic System and BPS dentures distinguishes itself from standard dentures as they are made by only products from Ivoclar Vivodent brand. These include and not limited to materials and equipment used for primary impressions of the mouth, secondary impressions, composition of and the teeth arrangement, and injection type of acrylic (plastic).
How are your
BPS dentures different to other practices that also provide BPS dentures?
Many dental clinics and laboratories are BPS certified, however, additional principles and components are not incorporated whilst fabricating a set of top and bottom dentures. These result in numerous sore spots and adjustments required after the dentures have been delivered and fitted. They are "uncomfortable and don’t seem to work like the old pairs do."
These principles are namely: the bilateral balanced occlusion, or the lingualised balanced occlusion; and the component: the Ivoclar Vivodent tooth set-up guide plane. The guide plane itself is not required to achieve the balanced occlusal concepts but assists the technician to achieve it much easier. Other professionals may argue the 'face bow' is important which is a huge crane-like device that sits on your face locating your ear, jaw, nose bridge in relation to your upper jaw to simulate the individual's jaw movements. However, many users do not use it to the full capacity making it near redundant and time consuming.

No adjustment or sore spots from new dentures?
It all lies in the teeth arrangement. Most if not all clinicians are able to produce outstanding mouth impressions and capture relatively good top and bottom jaw relationships called the bite registration. However, it is the jagged teeth association between the top and bottom jaw that causes sore spots. Most technicians or clinicians who set up their teeth do so in just an upwards and downwards motion. The human jaw does not work simply in an up and down motion. We chew. This involves sideways, forward, back and circular motion. Compensating Curves (Curve of Spee, Curve of Wilson, Sphere of Monson) are introduced into dentures in order to simulate a smooth circular motion. Within reason, at any one point all teeth cusps are in contact with the top and bottom dentures simultaneously creating an even distribution of chewing forces.
Simultaneous teeth contacts distribute even pressure on your gums preventing sore spots. This is called balanced occlusion.
Provided the food you eat is not rock solid and chew on both sides at the same time, no concentrated pressure point occurs that arises in these sore spots that can lead to aggravating ulcers.
Denture teeth are individually placed
Denture-wearers may have heard clinicians/technician say, "the teeth are individually placed". As of 2019, in New Zealand and Australia, almost all dental clinics and laboratories still individually place their teeth as technology is still lacking refinement. If the principles and component mentioned above are not used, then even the highest quality materials used on the most expensive dentures do not result in a marked improvement in comfort or function as one would have wished for as compared to the lowest grade of materials used in a similar manner.

Single top or bottom dentures do not require special teeth arrangement as your own teeth determines and limits the denture teeth placement. Single BPS dentures differ from standard dentures purely in their quality and branding. However, a BPS top AND bottom set of dentures differ in that way as they require to work in harmony with each other.
Disharmony is the cause of sore spots like a vehicle on a gravel road as compared to a nicely smoothed tar-sealed road. In this manner, a single top or bottom set of dentures are not in harmony with your own teeth hence the need for adjustments to minimize this disharmony.
Why do other practices not use balanced occlusion?
All dental professionals have been taught or have come across the phenomenon but do not practice it. Some do not see it as necessary or simply they cannot achieve it due to biological or technical reasons. Tradition methods have sufficed without significant issues. Balanced occlusion is relatively difficult to muster, and many do not have the equipment and/or the skill. It is time consuming and somewhat an expensive practice, hence, the most acceptable justification of the cost other than the higher quality of materials.
